Rain and Floods

Added on 03 January 2013

The prolonged periods of heavy rain are taking their toll on the countryside and our roads. The River Axe, the Axe Yeo, and our rhynes and ditches are being tested to the full. Unfortunately there have been a small number of incidents of flooding. The Parish Council does keep an eye open for blocked drains and gullies, contacting Somerset Highways who generally respond promptly. We are aware of problems with roadside ditches becoming blocked with debris and hedge trimmings or being obstructed after heavy vehicles cause damage, but the responsibility for maintaining these belongs to the adjacent landowner. Landowners and farming contractors also have a responsibility to minimise mud being carried onto highways and hedge cuttings being deposited on roads.
There are a number of springs emerging around the parish which result in high volumes of surface water on roads. If you have one of these springs near you then please let the council know, by email (click here), so that records can be maintained to assist in the resolution of the problem.
