Car Break-ins – a message from the local police
There have been a significant number of car break-ins with a few houses been burgled as well. It started in September really with 6 cars being attacked in Shipham. Someone has walked up the road trying car door handles and those that are not locked were entered and property stolen. Between Sept and now Cheddar had been visited with cars and an insecure house being entered and property stolen, Mark village again cars and an unlocked garage entered and Wedmore on two occasions again unlocked vehicles. They occur around 3am - 430am.
Clearly we live in such a safe and trustworthy part of the country that locking cars/houses and taking valuable items out of your car is not deemed necessary and to a very large degree this is the case. We seem to be suffering from people who are believed to be coming in from outside the area to prey on this hard earned trust.
There is a large effort from the Police to identify and catch these people to put an end to these crimes but in the mean time please lock the cars and houses when you go to bed and remove valuables from the car.
One example was the police found a car on a driveway with the Satnav in the window. Looking in the car revealed a brief case, laptop, back pack and box's of unknown items which were all on the front seat, with the mobile on charge. This was clearly ready for an early start in the morning. Many of the cars that have been entered were on their driveway so this is not deemed, by many people, as a unsafe!
